One of the things I love most about working with my clients is their willingness to try something new on a photoshoot. My workflow on session day involves ensuring the client feels comfortable and working through well constructed poses and movement to capture beautiful images. Also, I must keep the client on track with positive energy, manage lighting, composition, environment, and ensure safety. Finally, I want my client to have a great experience or else, what's the point, right?
When is the right time to work in new ideas? How do you present a new concept when you're already managing so many other issues during a session? Is there a good time to try something new, and when do you do this? I have found three things that help me when presenting new ideas or options to my clients that have really turned into some beautiful images.
- Always confirm that any option you present to your client is okay with them and safe to perform. If your clients are willing to try something new, like underwater images, flying tennis balls, or atmosphere spray, certify they are comfortable with the idea.
- If you are unsure about the images working out, be confident in conveying the process of trying and creating to your client. If you know you have captured what you needed from the session, try using the last few moments to experiment with something new. If the images don't work out, at least you tried, but what if they do! No matter the turn out, always thank your client for their flexibility and willigness to help you try something new.
- Finally, the energy you bring in working with your client and sharing something new should translate to their experience, and will help you navigate new ideas in the future.
Keep pushing those comfort zones and see what develops.
